Empowering hiring managers in less than 30 minutes

With around 2,000 employees across 10 offices, nmcn is a people-focused business that works in partnership with their customers to deliver major built environment and critical national infrastructure projects across the United Kingdom. To support their continuous growth, the recruiting team typically hires about 400 people per year, primarily for highly-competitive specialist roles.

“Recruiting the right people is imperative to moving our business forward. But, we are often fishing in the same pool as other companies, so it can be quite competitive to hire the best talent,” explains Adam Pugh, Group Recruitment Manager at nmcn.

Having outgrown their previous applicant tracking system (ATS), the nmcn team began looking for an innovative solution that could help improve their hiring process. “Recruiting is a big part of our business performance, so we want to go about it in the best way possible,” says Adam. “Hire could both accomplish what our previous ATS did and do a lot more on top of that. The system is already really good, but it is also constantly updating and improving.”

Equipping hiring managers with an intuitive system

In transitioning their recruiting solution, one of the most important pieces for nmcn was improving the experience for hiring managers. “Our previous ATS was only for the recruitment team, so hiring managers didn’t have the option to log in. Hiring teams could only collaborate over phone or email,” explains Adam. “We engage a lot with hiring managers, so it was really important to find a tool they could use and that would make things easier for them.”

“Hire has been really popular and very well received,” states Adam. “It’s so easy and straightforward. Hiring managers can be up and running on the system in less than 30 minutes.”

Once hiring managers are using Hire, they are able to move much faster and more effectively support the recruiting process. “Having everything done in one system has eliminated the back and forth between hiring managers and recruiters,” says Adam. “In our old system, hiring managers just received CVs in an email from the recruitment team. With Hire, they get a notification as soon as a job is posted and can instantly log in to view their candidates. They have so much more autonomy to quickly get involved and take action.”

Upleveling the candidate experience through collaborative hiring

Increased hiring manager involvement has empowered nmcn to respond to candidates faster. “One of the big advantages for us with Hire is that hiring managers and recruiters can now get notifications when CVs come in, as well as a daily round-up. So, if a hiring manager has 10 jobs, they can get an email every day with all the new applications that have been submitted,” explains Adam. “Hiring managers are now acting on more CVs and reaching out to candidates faster.”

This includes referred candidates, which nmcn sees as a critical component in their recruiting process. “We rely on employee referrals to help us find the very best candidates,” says Adam. “Referrals is something Hire does really well. By keeping everything in one place, Hire makes it easy for us to track and respond to referred candidates faster.”

Hiring teams are also now able to provide feedback more quickly and effectively, which translates to a faster decision for candidates. “In our old ATS, hiring managers would have to provide feedback over phone or email, which would often get lost,” notes Adam. “Hire keeps a log of interviews, and hiring managers have to provide feedback in the system. Hire ensures that all our candidate feedback is in one place and easily traceable. So, we can quickly find information on candidates and understand why they did or did not move forward.”

Increased collaboration between hiring managers and recruiters has also helped to find places at nmcn for candidates that could be better fits for different roles. As Adam describes, “we use Hire’s @mention feature daily. It’s especially useful when a candidate applies to a role that they aren’t quite suited for, but they could be a great fit for something else. Rather than having to spend time sending an email and waiting for a response, we can just @mention the other hiring manager and move the candidate forward more quickly.”

Streamlining recruiting workflows to move faster and save time

In addition to empowering hiring managers to take action faster, the recruiting team at nmcn has also been able to speed up their workflows with Hire. “Hire just makes our life easier and quicker. Recruiting is a lot less stressful of a process now,” notes Adam. “The interface is really user friendly and uncomplicated. It does what we need it to do in a simple yet effective way.”

Adam calls out Hire’s mass action capabilities as a major time-saver for the nmcn team. “I can group candidates together and use templates to quickly respond to them all at once or reject in mass with the click of a button.

Hire’s G Suite integration has also helped to speed up hiring at nmcn. “The integration with Google Calendar and Gmail make things really easy for us. Scheduling is a lot quicker now, and if a candidate emails me, it goes directly into Hire,” explains Adam. “It’s really quite clever how it tracks it all, and keeping everything in one place has been a real bonus for us.”

In summary, Adam noted, “I would definitely recommend Hire for its speed, ease of use, and ability to get hiring managers involved. It has made recruiting at nmcn so much quicker, which is massive for us.”
